MIQUAA II & SOS – Decarbonization and Seismic Oscillation Damping

YEAR

2023–2025

PARTNERS

Italimpianti S.r.l. (project lead); in collaboration with academic and industrial partners (CNR, suppliers of innovative materials and seismic protection devices)

LOCATION

Italimpianti production facility, Pian Camuno (BS); extended to studies on seismic-resilient infrastructures

MIQUAA II extends and strengthens the MIQUAA project by introducing decarbonization processes integrated with AIA technology for CO₂ capture and conversion. In parallel, the SOS line is developed to mitigate seismic oscillations through structural modeling, design, and validation of energy dissipation solutions. The two project pillars aim to integrate air quality, decarbonization, and seismic resilience into integrated HSE + Resilience packages for industry.

MIQUAA II – Decarbonization and the Green Deal

The MIQUAA II project is positioned within the Smart Factory framework and targets highly efficient production processes for industrial sustainability. It continues the MIQUAA program by integrating decarbonization pathways aligned with the European Green Deal’s net-zero objective.

Developed solutions focus on:

·       CO₂ sequestration and conversion into stable substances (bicarbonates), generating secondary raw materials

·       Systematic monitoring and control of environmental parameters through IoT platforms

·       Carbon capture solutions optimized for energy efficiency and integration with renewable energy sources

·       ESG integration, improving corporate performance indicators through CO₂ sequestration and enhanced worker welfare

Operational Phases – Implementation Objectives

OR1 – Study of the new decarbonization process (industrial research):
Analysis of CO₂ transformation methods into bicarbonates and integration with AIA technology.

OR2 – Process analysis:
Optimization of the process and AIA infrastructures for intensive use, including evaluation of costs, materials, and corrosion aspects.

OR3 – Effectiveness testing:
Development of prototypes, material selection, and monitoring of process parameters (pressure, temperature, pH, environmental indicators) to maximize efficiency.

OR4 – Effectiveness certification:
Field evaluation and certification of results by CNR, measuring carbon conversion rates and pollutant abatement.

Expected outcomes include the development of a proprietary decarbonization process for integration into industrial sites, validation of the monitoring platform, and production of secondary raw materials derived from CO₂.

SOS – Seismic Oscillation Damping

The SOS line addresses the seismic resilience of industrial buildings. The technological scope combines advanced structural engineering, innovative materials, and protection systems.

Main objectives include:

·       Dynamic analysis of soil and structures, applying capacity design principles to prevent brittle failure mechanisms

·       Use of innovative materials such as fiber-reinforced concrete, shape-memory alloys, and composite materials

·       Seismic isolation technologies (elastomeric and sliding isolators) and energy dissipation systems

·       Monitoring and predictive maintenance through IoT sensors and Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) systems

The project aims to identify the most effective solutions for seismic isolation, energy absorption, and dissipation, to be integrated into new infrastructures or retrofit applications. The ultimate goal is to reduce seismic risk, limit productivity losses, and deliver safer, more sustainable industrial infrastructures.
